Is there any Mexican Silver that is worth more than just scrap silver value?
The answer is: Yes!
There is some Mexican silver that is worth a premium. Here is a list of types of items or brands of silver made in Mexico that are worth more money: 1. Taxco - The city of Taxco, Mexico south of Mexico City is renowned for being the home of some of the most famous Mexican master silversmiths. These include William Spratling, Hector Aguilar, Los Castillo, Antonio Pineda and many others. Their hand made silver jewelry items in particular are typically worth in the hundreds of dollars per troy ounce. Their hollowware and flatware items are worth usually at double or triple the scrap silver value.
2. Tane - Tane has been a manufacturer of luxury silver items in Mexico since 1942. Their silver items are typically elaborate and employ unusual designs. They also make high end pieces that have a mixture of both silver and gold. The plainer piece made by Tane can be worth just close to scrap value, however, the elaborate designed pieces are worth double or triple the metal value. Anything that has both gold an silver is worth even more.
3. Sanborns - Sanborns of Mexico City is a longstanding department store chain in Mexcio similar to Macy's in The United States. They manufactured a lot of sterling silver items. Unfortunately, for collectors value a lot of these pieces typically are only valued for their intrinsic silver value. If it is a more unusual piece it can be worth up to double scrap.
4. Other Brands made in Mexico - Other brands and manufacturers made in Mexico are typically only going to be worth scrap silver value, unless it is something unsual and fabulous looking. The collectors and buyers out there still rank silver made by The United States, England, Germany, France, Russia and other countries much higher than they typically do with Mexican silver as a general category. As a result, generic Mexican silver hollware and flatware is typically going to be sold at a lower price per troy once unless it is a premium maker or unless it is something really outstanding.
