Wood & Hughes Manufacturers Marks Silver

Here is a little bit about this manufacuter as excerpted from the print book: Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers written by Dorothy T. Rainwater and Judy Redfield:

In 1833 William Gale, Sr., formed a partnership with Jacob Wood and Jasper H. Hughes, under the name Gale, Wood & Hughes. Wood and Hughes had both served apprenticeships under Gale. In 1845 they left to form their own company.

Jacob Wood and Jasper H. Hughes remained in the partnership until Jacob Wood's death in 1850. Stephen T. Fraprie who had previously been employed by the firm, entered into partnership in 1850. Jasper H. Hughes retired in 1856.

Various other members of the Wood and Hughes families were admitted into partnership over the years. Soeffing (in Venable's Silver in America, 1994, biographical section, p. 324) indicates Charles Wood, brother of Jacob, was admitted prior to 1863; Henry Wood, brother of Jacob,was admitted 1863; Charles H. Hughes was admitted prior to 1863; and Dixon G. Hughes, son of Jasper W. Hughes, was admitted

1864. Charles Wood died in 1881, Charles H. Wood in 1883 and S.T. Fraprie in 1889.

The company manufactured a full line of solid silver tableware, with a particularly wide selection of ornamental flatware.

Loss of its southern accounts as an initial result of the Civil War posed a severe financial threat to the firm. However the subsequent northern economic boom enabled it both to recover and to prosper.

In the 1860s and 1870s Charles F. Richers designed and patented many flatware patterns for the company. Charles Witteck also worked for Wood & Hughes following the dissolution of the Biederhase firm (q.v.).

A disastrous fire in 1891 resulted in the loss of records, models and patterns. The company never fully recovered from this blow, and by 1899 the partners determined to sell out. Mr. Frost of the retail firm Black, Starr & Frost, persuaded Clarence A. Dunn with his friends, Charles Graff and William L. Washbourne to buy out Wood and Hughes. The company after that was no longer in production.
