What is English Sterling Silver Worth?
In the 1200's the English were the ones that set the standard for sterling silver which is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. The British have been regularly manufacturing sterling silver items ever since.
Ironically, in today's marketplace, English silver has a tendancy to worth less money in comparison to its counterparts in The United States. There are some famous manufacturers in England like Elkington, Carrs and C.J. Vander as well some notable makers who produced items for royalty like Paul Storr and Paul de Lamerie. However, in England, there was never really and silver super powers like TIffany and Company of New York or Gorham of Rhode Island.
Although silver from England is of comparable craftsmanship and quality, the collectibility of English pieces is somewhat more limited. The demand for for famous American Silversmiths and Manufacturers is greater.
Unfortunately, because of this, a good amount of English silver has a tendency to be worth only slight more than its intrinsic silver value. There are many exceptions of course and here they are:
1. 18th Century or earlier - Any English silver made prior to year 1800 will absolutely be worth a much more valuable premium than had it be made later.
2. Royal Silver Makers - Any manufacturer or silversmith that produced goods for royalty will have their items tend to go for more money.
3. Very Ornate Silver - English items that are chased or repoussed tend to be worth more money than plainer items.
4. Better Makers - There a many better makers and more well known silversmiths that usually fetch higher prices. One such maker is the famous female silversmith Hester Bateman. Her items typically go for 2-4 times more than what others bring in the marketplace.
